A Coast Guard has died when a patrol boat sank in the Gulf of Finland off Loviisa late on Midsummer’s Day, the Gulf of Finland Coast Guard says in a press release.
After a contact to seabed, a patrol boat of Turva leaked and sank, leaving only the bow of the boat on the surface.
The boat had a crew of three. Two crew members managed to escape, but one Coast Guard was trapped in a boat filled with water.
The Coast Guard left on the boat was eventually removed from the boat. He was transported by a Finnish Border Guard helicopter to Meilahti Hospital in Helsinki, where he was later found dead, the press release said.
Finnish Interior Minister Maria Ohisalo commented the case on Twitter saying, that she shares in the grief of loved ones and colleagues.
